BODY IMAGE

How content are you with your body?

Food is part of the physiological needs that is the foundation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We need food to survive, along with water, air, shelter, clothing and reproduction. Hundreds of years ago food was hunted; we only ate when needed, and used a lot of energy to gather it. Today, we have Uber Eats, Deliveroo, social isolation, and then we can wash it down with social media images of unrealistic expectations of what an average person should look like today.

Obesity and Type 2 diabetes have increased over the years, especially in the Western culture. Easy access to food (convenience), less physical activity and comorbid conditions such as depression and other mental health conditions play a role.

But allow me to discuss the rise of Disordered Eating - Binge Eating Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulemia Nervosa, Purging Disorder and Night Eating Syndrome (both of these are classified as ‘Other Specific Feeding or Eating Disorder’ - OSFED). In 2012, 38% of Australians with an eating disorder had an OSFED. As many as 1 million of Australians at a time are living with disordered eating.

Wouldn’t it be nice to stop the rollercoaster?
